Chapter 5

अध्याय ५
गुरूरग्निर्द्विजातीनां वर्णानां ब्राह्मणो गुरूः |
पतिरेव गुरूः स्त्रीणां सर्वस्याऽभ्यागतो गुरूः ||१||

The teacher of Brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya is the fire. Brahmin is the sole teacher of all parts of society. The teacher of ladies is there husband, and the guest is the teacher of all.
यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षणच्छेदनतापताडनैः |
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुष परीक्ष्यते त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा ||२||

Wear, tear, heat and grind tests the properties of gold, on similar basis alms, calm, efficacy and demeanor tests manliness of man.
तावद् भयेषु भेतव्यं यावद्भयमनागतम् |
आगतं तु भयं दृष्टवा प्रहर्तव्यमशङ्कया ||३||

Get fear of fear when you face it. But when fear fades away just try to avoid in future.
एकोदरसमुद्रभुता एक नक्षत्रजातकाः |
न भवन्ति समा शीलेः यथा बदरिकण्टकाः ||४||

Children of same parent, born under same stars may not have even one quality in common. Just as all fruits of same tree may not have same taste, and all thorns of flower may not be same.
निःस्पृहो नाऽधिकारी स्यान्नकामी मण्नप्रियः |
नाऽविदग्धः प्रियं ब्र्यात स्फुटवक्ता न वञ्चकः ||५||

An officer is proud of their post, and is a bit greedy. It comes with post. Beauty loving people will always get carried by seeing the beauty. You can’t expect fool people to speak intelligently. People speaking clearly will never betray you.
मूर्खाणां पण्डिता द्वेष्या अधनानां महाधनाः |
वाराऽऽङ्गणाः कुलस्त्रीणां सुभगानां च दुर्भगाः ||६||

Enemy of fool are intelligent people, enemy of poor people are rich, enemy of ladies are prostitutes, and enemy of married women are widows. Ugly things are enemy of beautiful things.

आलस्योपहता विद्या परहस्तगताः स्त्रियः |
अल्पबीजं हतं क्षेत्रं हतं सैन्यमनायकम् ||७||

Laziness kills knowledge. Woman in other hand looses everything. Scarce of seed leads to destruction of irrigation and without leader army just die.
अभ्यासाद्धार्यते विद्या कुलं शीलेन धार्यते |
गुणेन ज्ञायते त्वार्यः कोपो नेत्रेण गम्यते ||८||

Practice brings knowledge. Dynasty is made by great demeanor, work and attitude. Great people are known by their demeanor and anger is expressed through eyes.
वित्तेन रक्ष्यते धर्मो विद्या योगेन रक्ष्यते |
मृदुना रक्ष्यते भूपः सत्स्त्रिया रक्ष्यते गृहम् ||९||

Money protects religion, discipline and yog protects knowledge. Soft heartens protects king and good wife calm and demeanor protects home.
अन्यथा वेदपाण्डित्यं शास्त्रमाचारमनसयथा |
अन्यथा कुवचः शान्तं लोकाः क्लिश्यन्ति चान्यथा ||१०||

Those people who say bad words to Shastra, saints, etc cannot do anything bad for them. In return they themselves suffer.
दारिद्रयनाशनं दानं शीलं दुर्गतिनाशनम् |
अज्ञाननाशिनी प्रज्ञा भावना भयनाशिनी ||११||

Alms finishes poverty, demeanor and calmness finish bad circumstances. Brain removes illiteracy and faith in god removes all kinds of fear.
नाऽस्ति कामसमो व्याधिर्नाऽस्ति मोहसमो रिपुः |
नाऽस्ति कामसमो वह्रिर्नाऽस्ति ज्ञानात् परं सुखम् ||१२||

Sexual sickness is the worst kind in all kind of sickness. Endearment is the worst enemy. No fire is as bad as anger. Knowledge and Self knowledge is the greatest happiness.
जन्ममृत्यु हि यात्येको भुनक्त्येकः शुभाऽशुभम् |
नरकेषु पतत्येक एको याति परां गतिम् ||१३||

Life cycle of man is all alone. He takes birth, suffers all disease, suffers sickness, suffers from world affairs, enjoys this world and dies all alone.
तृणं ब्रह्मविदः स्वर्गस्तृणं शूरस्य जीवितम् |
जिताऽशस्य तृणं नारी निःस्पृहस्य तृणं जगत् ||१४||

Heaven for knowledgeable person is just like a small piece. For great warrior life is just trifle. Women for bachelor is just trifle and people without any desire, this world is just trifle.

विद्या मित्रं प्रवासेषु भार्या मित्रं गृहेषु च |
व्याधितस्यौषधं मित्रं धर्मो मित्रं मृतस्य च ||१५||

Knowledge is the best friend of a man in foreign. Wife is the best friend of man in the house. For sick medicine is the best friend and for dead person best friend is his good deeds.
वृथा वृष्टिः समुद्रेषु वृथा तृप्तेषु भोजनम् |
वृथा दानं धनाढ़्येषु वृथा दीपो दिवाऽपि च ||१६||

Rain on ocean is waste, to make eat stomach full person is just waste. Giving alms to rich is waste, and switching light in daytime is waste.
नाऽस्ति मेघसमं तोयं नाऽस्ति चात्मसमं बलम् |
नाऽस्ति चक्षुःसमं तेजो नाऽस्ति धान्यसमं प्रियम् ||१७||

Water of clouds is immaculate; the power of inner soul is the most powerful power. No other part is as great as the eye of a person and nothing else than food is affection able.
अधना अधमिच्छन्ति वाचं चैव चतुष्पदाः |
मानवाः स्वर्गभिच्छन्ति मोक्षमिच्छन्ति देवताः ||१८||

Scarcity of money brings greed for more money for a man. Four legged animals crave for language, people generally crave for heaven and knowledgeable people pray to be out of the cycle of life and death.
सत्येन धार्यते पृथ्वी सत्येन तपते रविः |
सत्येन वाति वायुश्च सर्वं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् |१९||

Truth has made this earth stable, truth gives the sun his light, truth makes the wind flow and everything just rely on truth.
चला लक्ष्मीश्चलाः प्राणाश्चलं जीवित यौवनम् |
चलाचले च संसारे धर्म एको हि निश्चलः ||२०||

Money is fickle by nature. It vanishes one day. Soul is also destructible. Life and youth are going to get destroy one day. Everything is going to be vanished and die. This is the only truth of this world.
नराणां नापितो धूर्तः पक्षिणां चैव वायसः |
चतुष्पदां श्रृ्गालस्तु स्त्रीणां धूर्तां च मालिनी ||२१||

Barber is the wicked person in male, crow is the most wicked bird, fox is the most wicked animal and flower picking lady is the most wicked female.
